Promoting Reading Across the Watergrove Trust

Watergrove Trust Book Club

A small group of children collaborate with the other Trust Primary Schools to form the Watergrove Book Club. These sessions give the children the opportunity to discuss texts in more depth, unpick writer’s intentions and expand their vocabulary. The children meet fortnightly, online and in person, following a quality text of their choosing.

Trust Reading Group

Kentmere leads on the Watergrove Trust Reading Strategy. Professionals meet regularly to collaboratively share research, best practice and training to promote effective strategies to support and develop learners’ reading. A number of inter-school pupil groups have been set up through this and are running successfully.

Springboard strategy – Peer coaching

Year 5/6 children take part in peer to peer reading coaching, which aims to reduce the literacy gap and support learners with their reading journey. Learners from our Trust Secondary Schools, Matthew Moss High School and Wardle Academy, are carefully matched based on their common interests and book genre choices. Coaches have been trained in the reading strategies (RAMP) used by the school and, via online communication, coach the children each week through mutual problem solving, observations, collaborative learning and discussion to support reading comprehension strategies.

Promoting reading – our reading competitions

We are truly committed to promoting an enjoyment of reading amongst our learners and their teachers. We are constantly looking for ways to engage children and encourage them to read. Within the Trust we run regular competitions, and entries are celebrated across schools. Favourites have included book based movie trailers, alternative front covers and extreme reading.
