Pupil Leadership
At Kentmere Academy, we relish the opportunities for our pupils to make a difference to the day to day running of school life. The Pupil voice is exercised in a range of different areas of school life, and Kentmere Academy students can make a positive impact on different elements that make up the running of the school. The areas below explain how our students are able to get involved.
The Prefect Council
The Prefect Council were chosen by a panel of judges after giving a presentation to the Year 5/6 children. They meet Mrs Howard once a week and discuss the school, events they would like to raise money for and many other areas of school life.
The Sports Crew
The Sports Crew are a team of dedicated pupils who ensure that the sporting provision at Kentmere runs smoothly. Pupils have various duties such as organising activities, making sure the equipment is kept tidy and helping to keep people safe during sporting competitions. Our Sports Crew is very important to ensuring that the sporting activities at Kentmere Academy are kept to the highest of standards.
The Eco Council
The Eco-council consists of children from Year 1 to 6. They meet on a fortnightly basis and discuss a range of issues linked to Eco topics.
We have now achieved our 3rd Eco Schools Green Flag.
What have we done so far?
- Planted fruit trees
- Planted over 200 trees along the edge of the school field
- Placed signs near all taps used by the children to encourage them to save water
- Litter picking rota set up
- Placed paper recycle bins in every classroom and central area
- Grown vegetables in the Secret Garden
- Had the RSPB visit EYFS and KS1 and completed different activities
- Had United Utilities visit Year 3/4 to discuss saving water
Our next steps:
- Develop our planting and growing more
- Ensure all children understand the need to reduce, reuse, recycle to help protect animals around the world
- Ensure our Eco work to be embedded in every class, not just the responsibility of Eco council, gardening club etc.
Pro Social Ambassadors
A Pro-Social Ambassador is someone who promotes kindness, cares about others and keeps an eye out for the whole school community. They are friendly and approachable and willing to listen to others’ problems and provide support. They actively work to show people that bullying is uncool, and has no place in our school.
Digital Leaders
We are proud to have Digital Leaders who work hard at our school to promote E-Safety and support where appropriate across the school. Feeding back at regular meetings, the Digital Leaders report on other students’ views on Computing and suggest ideas for enhancing learning. They help to organise E-Safety events across school including E-Safety workshops.
The School Council
Our School Council consists of 9 pupils; 1 pupil from each class (KS1-KS2). In order to be selected for the upcoming year, School Councillors prepare a presentation explaining why they should be chosen. It is then the class responsibility to decide which pupil would represent their class the best and this decision is made through a private class vote. The School Council then has a further discussion and votes for the following roles: Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer; but each member of the School Council has an important role to play.
In order to discuss upcoming events and feedback pupil’s ideas, School Councillors meet fortnightly. So far, the School Council have organised many events and raised a great amount of money for charity, this includes: organising an Ice Bucket Challenge, running a stall at the Christmas Fair, selling biscuits for the Macmillan Coffee Morning, distributing Valentines Cupcakes across the school, organising the Dinosaur Egg competition and collecting food for our local Food Bank. The School Councillors also run their own daily Tidy Classroom Competition and have presented to our Governing Body. At the moment, we are working towards the School Council Gold Award.
Playground Leaders
Our school is extremely lucky to have some brilliant Playground Leaders. At lunch time their role is to initiate games with other children. They help the Lunchtime Supervisors make our dinner times more fun and enjoyable. They organise playground games and activities for the pupils to participate in and work together to think of new, exciting activities for lunchtimes. They receive training to lead pupils in structured, fun games. When children are actively engaged in activities behaviour improves and the playground is a fun and harmonious place to be. The Playground Leaders are taught skills such as communication, fair play, organising groups/teams and the STEP principle (Space, Task, Equipment, People).
