Reception
Reception is part of the EYFS and follows the EYFS curriculum.
There are 7 areas of learning, which children develop through a balance of focused tasks alongside an adult, and independent learning with the areas of provision.
The seven areas of learning are made up of the prime areas of learning, which the children develop first, which then underpin the specific areas of learning.

Prime Areas:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Physical Development
Specific Areas:
Literacy, Maths, Understand the World, Expressive Arts and Design.

Celebrating Success
At Kentmere Academy we believe in celebrating the success of our pupils at every suitable opportunity, from the smallest to the grandest achievement. We know that positive reinforcement is an important part of each pupil’s personal growth and it is something we are proud to facilitate.
Merits
The children are awarded merits for good work and effort, good behaviour, achievement or by showing good manners to teachers and their peers.
25 merits – Bronze certificate and badge
50 merits – Silver certificate, badge and a prize from the treasure chest
75 merits – Gold certificate, badge and a book token
As teachers we are always thrilled when a child or group of children obtain a personal best, do something extraordinary or show great community spirit.
Reading Challenge Tree
At Kentmere, we are keen to promote a lifelong love of reading and want to encourage the children in any way we can. We encourage our children to read widely and often; rewarding reading behaviours. This may be for recommending a book to a friend, sharing a book review, trying a different genre, increasing the amount of time spent reading or talking confidently about the books read. Children can receive certificates and badges which are presented in assemblies. They get to add their book magnet to the Reading Challenge Tree in the hall.
Routines
Please ensure that children come to school with their book bags and reading records every day.
The children have a PE session on a Monday each week. Please ensure PE kits are sent in on the first day. These remain in school until the half term break, when they will be sent home to be washed. Please ensure that every piece of PE kit and school uniform is clearly labelled with your child’s name.
The children have weekly forest school sessions. A pair of wellies should be brought into school, clearly marked with their name, to remain in school. Waterproofs will be provided.

Homework
At the start of the half term, all children will receive a homework menu. Children are expected to choose 2 areas of learning and evidence this in the style they choose (this could be through photographs, art work, writing etc) and the homework can also be recorded on Tapestry. Parents can request paper/a book to access homework tasks if they wish.
Additional Phonics work may be sent home to practise what they have been doing in class.
In addition, the children are expected to read at home, and have their reading records signed, daily.
