Consulting with our SEN Pupils, Parents & Carers
Consultation with Children and Young People with SEND
At Kentmere Academy we recognise the importance of strong and open relationships with parents to ensure the best outcome for pupils.
Teachers/SENCO and Support Staff work collaboratively to identify the support required to meet agreed outcomes. The provision is planned and interventions are allocated to individual needs. Wherever possible, pupils take an active role with setting their outcomes and discussing them with the class teacher/SENCO. Pupils have regular meetings with staff to discuss their progress and support.
Consultation with parents and carers of children and young people with SEND
We are committed to working with parents and carers to identify their child’s needs and support. Parents and carers will be involved throughout the process. There is a range of ways this can be done, for example:
- Termly parents/ carers evenings;
- Termly SEND coffee mornings/ parent workshops;
- Ongoing discussions with a class teacher and/or SENCO;
- An ‘open-door’ policy, where parents and carers are welcome to come into school to discuss any concerns they may have;
- Regular reviews of their child’s SEN Support Plan/ EHC Plan.
Resources and Support for Parents
This Padlet is a really useful platform which captures lots of advice, resources and contact numbers to support parents and carers. https://padlet.com/RaisingRochdale/primary-age-speech-language-and-communication-support-for-fa-p0wvrdl72zasbfs1
| Young Minds have created a useful ‘Supporting Parents Helpfinder’. By answering six questions, parents can find out how to support their child’s mental health during the pandemic (and beyond). Find the help finder here | |
| When emotions explode (Young Minds) Young Minds have also created a useful poster highlighting ways to give support to children when they have angry feelings or outbursts and may help families start a conversation and talk about each other’s feelings. Download the poster here | |
| Screen Savers: Looking after your eyes, body and mind when using screens (Beacon House) We are spending more time online than ever before, possibly sitting and working with poor posture as we use makeshift desks and chairs. There is a tendency to take fewer breaks and less exercise and this is affecting our physical well-being. Beacon House the specialist, therapeutic service for young people, families and adults has produced a series of six posters outlining ways to keep safe and alert when working at home, whether children or adults.
