Welcome to Kentmere Academy

Our children have been getting creative and using maps as a stimulus for drawing!

They have been exploring how artists can use art to tell stories and communicate things that are important to them. The children have investigated the idea of composition — thinking carefully about how things are arranged on a page — and have created their own maps to illustrate familiar journeys.

Using their sketchbooks, the children have experimented with colour, detail, different media and drawing techniques, developing their ideas as they worked.

We have loved seeing the children’s creativity, imagination and personal experiences come to life through their maps!

Last week, we were thrilled to welcome visitors from Brook Street School, Carlisle, who spent time visiting classes and seeing the fantastic maths learning that takes place at Kentmere every single day!

It was wonderful to showcase the progression of mathematical understanding across school:

🔹 Year 1 were learning about less than, greater than and equal to, working with numbers within 10.

🔹 Year 2 were partitioning numbers to 100 using the part, part, whole model.

🔹 Year 3 were developing their understanding of flexible partitioning with HTO, building on lots of practical work using Dienes to create numbers with hundreds, tens and ones.

🔹 Year 4 were finding more and less of 4-digit numbers.

🔹 Year 5 were reading and writing numbers up to 1,000,000.

🔹 Year 6 were exploring negative numbers.

Our visitors were incredibly impressed by the children’s behaviour for learning, their confidence and the clear progression in mathematical understanding throughout the school. 🌟

A huge well done to all our children and staff for showcasing the amazing maths learning happening at Kentmere!
