The summer 2020 Olympics might be delayed to 2021 but pupils and staff at Kentmere will start making their way there from September 2020.  Kentmere Academy and Nursery will be launching the Daily Mile for the 350+ pupils and staff in a campaign to get fit, increase exercise and have fun whilst improving their physical and mental health.

We know that for many, the time off school during Covid-19 has resulted in less activity and we want to mark the return to school with a high energy challenge that everyone can take part in.  There are lots of activities to promote physical and mental wellbeing at Kentmere and we know the impact that being healthy makes.  Our pupils and staff are happier, can focus better during the school day and they take this learning home to their families.  We have 5,857 miles to run or walk to get to our destination and this is under 20 miles per person.  We hope that we might have some pupils and staff doing more running than walking towards the end of the challenge.  Each day pupils and staff will take part to contribute to the mammoth challenge.  We will chat to each other along the way and will of course be observing social distancing.

The school is fortunate to have a brand new mile track in the school grounds so that the walking and running can be done safely. Sarah Ker who is leading the project at Kentmere Academy and Nursery said “I am really excited about this project as I know the children will enjoy the challenge and learn along the way.  Staff too sometimes need encouraging to exercise more, so by doing it together the whole school will feel the benefits of moving more and being in the fresh air”.  In school, we shall track our progress and see the countries and places of interest that we go through along the way.  We will learn about the countries that we are travelling through and hopefully some of our pupils will have been to these places and can tell us more about them.  During assembly time we will celebrate the distance that we have travelled and share our experiences of the project.

The pupils have already started the challenge and are enjoying the new track.  Comments from pupils include: “I love the daily mile because it’s good exercise” , “I love anything that involves running” and “the track is so bouncy and fresh!”

The Daily Mile is a national campaign that encourages a social physical activity, with children running or jogging at their own pace in the fresh air with friends. Children can occasionally walk to catch their breath, if necessary, but should aim to run or jog for the full 15 minutes. The aim is to give every child the opportunity to do The Daily Mile at primary school.  You can find out more at www.thedailymile.co.uk

Pearson National Teaching Awards - WINNERS!

Posted by Oliver on 19 Jun 2019 at 21:16

KENTMERE ACADEMY AND NURSERY HONOURED IN NATIONAL CELEBRATION OF TEACHING
Selected from thousands of nominations, Kentmere Academy and Nursery is one of just 68 Silver Award winners across the country who will be celebrated today [19 June], on ‘Thank A Teacher Day’, as the Pearson National Teaching Awards marks its 21st year of celebrating excellence in education.

Award-winning Kentmere Academy and Nursery will be presented with a prestigiousPearson Silver Teaching Award trophy at their school to celebrate their outstanding
achievement, as will their fellow Silver Award winners across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Pearson National Teaching Awards is an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they teach – many of whom go on to train as teachers themselves thanks to the significant impact their teachers have had on them.

Kentmere Academy and Nursery has been shortlisted to win one of just 13 Gold Awards at the UK’s “Oscars for Teachers”. They will join fellow Silver Award winners, along with three Scottish Education Award winners and three winners of the Professional Teaching Awards Cymru, at the 21st UK ceremony of the Pearson Teaching Awards. It is a glittering event held at the Roundhouse on 20 October. It is broadcast on BBC2 the following week, on 27 October, as “Britain’s Classroom Heroes” as a showcase of excellence in education.

Previous award presenters include former Prime Ministers David Cameron and Tony Blair, acting legends Jenny Agutter, Alison Steadman and Sheila Hancock, as well as sports and TV personalities including Shirley Ballas, Helen Glover, Brendan Cole and Nadiya Hussain.

Today, on ‘Thank A Teacher Day’, and throughout this week the Teaching Awards Trust -the charity that runs the awards - is asking people up and down the country to say “thank you” to a teacher who has made a significant difference in their lives. The Thank A Teacher campaign allows members of the public to send teachers a card in the post for free, by completing an online form and including a personal message. It takes two minutes but has a lasting impact on those exceptional teachers who receive them.

Education Secretary Damian Hinds said: “To be shortlisted for this award from thousands of nominations across the UK is a fantastic achievement and a testament to all of the winners’ commitment to the profession. I’m delighted that we are supporting the Pearson Teaching Awards to recognise the lifechanging effect inspirational teachers have on the lives of young people.
“Teachers deserve our thanks every day, but as today is dedicated to them, I want to take the opportunity to give my personal thanks to each and every one of the 450,000 teachers up and down the country who are inspiring the next generation day in, day out.“Meeting teachers and their pupils is the best part of my job and it’s been a pleasure to have visited over 100 schools since joining the Department. I’m constantly in awe of the dedication and enthusiasm I see both in and out of the classroom.”

Chinese Teachers at Kentmere

Two mathematics teachers, called Annie and Vivian from schools in Shanghai have arrived for a two-week period teaching maths at our school.

Annie and Vivian will be working and teaching alongside Miss Duffy, who went on a research visit to Shanghai in November /December 2018.

The exchange is part of a long-term project, run within the Maths Hubs programme, to help teachers in English schools introduce mastery approaches to teaching maths in their schools.

This is the fifth such exchange being run as part of the National Maths Hubs programme, funded by the DfE, and coordinated by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).

Primary School of the Year 2018!

Posted by Oliver on 8 Jul 2018 at 17:52

We are delighted to announce that we have won the Manchester Schools Award for Primary School of the Year 2018!

On Friday, some of our team attended an awards ceremony in Manchester after being shortlisted as finalists for the Primary School of the Year category. The Kentmere Brass Band blew attendees away with their performance during the welcome drinks and our Head Boy and Head Prefect had an amazing experience proudly accepting the award for the school. We are very proud of what we have achieved over the last 4 years and to have this recognised with the title Primary School of the Year is a great honour!
